Inspire yourself and your aspiring young writers this summer...

Weekly video lessons with assignments, instructor feedback and a final project.

  • The right frame of mind

In our first week, we will be working on building healthy reading and writing habits, learning how to think like a writer and draw inspiration from what we read. We will also examine the importance of intention and practice.

Week One Assignment: Reading List, Writing Prompts Workbook, My Favourite Writer mini essay

  • Nailing the opening paragraph

Now that we have a story outline, we will work on where to start telling the story and how to write our opening paragraph. In this session, we drill down on language use, how to structure a great opening, and grab the attention of the reader from the start.

Week Four Assignment: Writing an Opening Paragraph, Thesaurus Workbook

  • Ideas & story structure

In Week Two, we will be brainstorming, developing and outlining ideas. We will learn how to tell a great idea from a mediocre one and how to make a good idea even better. We will also look at how to approach ideas from different angles, points of view and storytelling styles.

Week Two Assignment: Ideas Worksheet, Writing Prompts Workbook, Points of View Exercises

  • Editing & critique

In Week Five, we learn how to edit our own work, what to look out for in our writing and how to make changes to our stories. We also learn about how to deal with criticism.

    Week Five Assignment: Story Writing

  • Who, what, where, how?

In Week Three, we start to structure our story: the setting, the characters, the story world. We also examine the hero's journey and the story arc: introduction, complication, rising tension, climax and resolution. We also flesh out the other characters in the story: allies, enemies, perhaps a nemesis?

Week Three Assignment: Story Outline worksheet, Story World Exercises

  • Final project

In the final week of the course, we will continue to work on our Story Writing final project and get it ready for submission.

Stories will be sent to the course instructor and feedback given.

Students who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate of completion and there will be awards for outstanding work.

Young people deserve to be encouraged to fulfil their dreams. If a young Muslim dreams of writing books one day, I want to help him or her to fulfil that dream, develop their talent and ignite their passion for writing. One of the best ways I can do this is by sharing what I have learned during my writing career, encouraging young writers and giving them the tools to tell their stories because the world needs to hear their voices.

Na'ima B. Robert, award-winning writer, editor and course instructor
